The murdered young man

The family of a 26-year-old man who was killed by residents of Amoam Achiase in the Ashanti Region by setting him on fire is demanding justice.

Driver’s mate, Wahab Sabaani, was attacked by a mob after the chief of the town, Nana Kusi Baabu II, called him an armed robber.

Family spokesperson, Mohammed Mumuni Zakari, says the body will not be buried until they get justice for their deceased relative.

“We need justice because Shabani is never a thief. We have more than 500 youth that can testify that Sabaani is never a thief. All that we need now is justice for our brother. Currently, we can’t bury him without seeing no justice because the youth is not ready to take it,” he said.

Amoam Achiase was recently in the news when two kidnapped Canadian nationals were rescued by security operatives.

This time around, it is for the killing and burning of the ‘trotro mate’ who is also a member of the Bawku Youth Association.

On the 20th of this month, Sabaani, who has hay fever, left his Asawasi family house unnoticed.

He trekked along a familiar route he had been plying, as a driver-apprentice and found himself at Amoam Achiase Palace, about 30 kilometres from home.

On seeing him, the chief, Nana Kusi Baabu II, reportedly fired three warning shots before shouting “armed robber, armed robber”.

The shouts attracted a crowd that lynched him. They put a car tyre around Sabaani’s neck and set his body on fire at about 2 p.m.

Police at Ejisu later retrieved the largely burnt body and deposited it at the Juaben Hospital morgue.

Mohammed Mumuni Zakari, the family spokesperson said, “the youth is calling on all the stakeholders and government to come in so that our brother will get justice because this killing is unacceptable. Sabaani was caught with empty handed. They didn’t see Saabani picking something and they arrested him. Sabaani as a brother has hay fever that attacks him from time-to-time and we are very sure what happened that day was the hay fever that attacked him that led  him to the chief’s house.”

Police have since arrested Nana Baabu II and an alleged accomplice, Akwasi Adu, who have both been arraigned and remanded in police custody by the Ejisu Magistrate Court.

They are to reappear on July 10, 2019.

Shaabani’s relatives want police to widen the scope of investigation in order to find all those involved in the criminal act.
