A group identifying itself as grassroots members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has blamed the party’s national leadership for deepening internal divisions and called on General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua to resign.
The group said the NPP must prioritise unity and conduct credible internal elections if it hopes to reorganise effectively and position itself for victory in the 2028 general elections.
Addressing a press conference in Kumasi, the group’s spokesperson, Prince Opoku, alleged that the party’s internal electoral processes have been plagued by confusion, disputes and irregularities.
He said members had expected the challenges that emerged during the polling station elections to be resolved before the constituency elections, but claimed the situation worsened instead.
“We witnessed a series of disturbances during the polling station elections and believed those issues would be resolved. Unfortunately, the constituency elections experienced even greater confusion. As a party in opposition seeking to return to power in 2028, we need a united front, not internal conflicts and divisions,” he said.
Prince Opoku further argued that, as a lawyer and the party’s chief administrator, Mr Kodua should have ensured that constituencies facing court injunctions did not proceed with elections until the legal matters had been resolved.
“It is worrying that constituencies with pending court injunctions were allowed to conduct elections, leading to unnecessary confusion and disputes. This has affected the image and credibility of the party,” he stated.
The group maintained that Mr Kodua should step down before the party’s upcoming regional elections, insisting that new leadership is needed to restore confidence in the NPP’s internal electoral process.
However, they added that if the General Secretary decides to remain in office, he must ensure future internal elections are conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner to promote peace, unity and confidence among party members.
The group expressed hope that the party’s leadership would address their concerns and strengthen the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
