Tensions boiled over at the Asokore Mampong District Court as relatives of an accused persons and the family of the deceased clashed following the remand of five suspects in the Sabon Zongo alleged murder case.
The five suspects were brought before the court for a second time during a committal hearing over the death of 27-year-old Yussif Zakari, who was allegedly lynched after being accused of stealing GH¢4,800.
The atmosphere at the court reportedly turned heated after the court’s decision to extend the suspects’ remand, leading to confrontations between some family members of the accused and those of the deceased.
Yussif Zakari’s death has sparked public concern over mob justice and the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands.
The incident dates back to the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Sabon Zongo in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
According to reports, Zakari and another man identified as Baaba Adamu were accused by some residents of stealing GH¢4,800. The two were allegedly apprehended by members of the community, after which an angry crowd attacked them.
Zakari was reportedly subjected to severe beatings during the assault and sustained multiple injuries. Although efforts were made to save his life, he later died from the injuries.
The five suspects are currently facing legal proceedings as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The case has renewed calls for restraint and for suspected offenders to be handed over to the appropriate authorities rather than subjected to mob punishment.
