Former Ghana international Kwadwo Asamoah has raised concerns over the perceived quality gap in the Black Stars squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Ghana are set for their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament and have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. After exiting at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022, the Black Stars are targeting a stronger showing this time around.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to announce his final squad on June 1, but Asamoah believes the current group may struggle against elite opposition.
“All these players that we are going to meet at the World Cup, the majority of them are playing in the Champions League, playing for bigger clubs, so to play countries like that during the World Cup won’t be easy,” Asamoah told 3Sports.
He also highlighted England’s recent progress under their current setup, describing them as a well-organised and dangerous side.
“England has been good in the past few years, having the new coach with them. They are playing very good football,” he added.
Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23, and then concluding their group fixtures against Croatia on June 27.
Ahead of the tournament, the Black Stars will fine-tune preparations with international friendlies against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2.
