The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has donated streetlights to traders at Kantamanto Market as part of efforts to improve visibility, security and overall trading conditions within the market.
The presentation followed earlier engagements between the Assembly and market leaders over concerns about inadequate lighting, particularly during early morning and evening business activities.
The items, made up of eight boxes containing two streetlights each, were handed over on behalf of the Mayor of Accra by Policy Advisor Paul Oblie Laryea.
Leading the presentation, the Deputy Director in charge of the 24-Hour Economy Office at the AMA, Mr. Nii Sakum Korley, said the intervention forms part of the Assembly’s broader commitment to responding to concerns raised by traders and improving conditions within major commercial centres.

According to him, the initial batch of 16 streetlights is intended to kick-start installation works while arrangements are made to provide additional units.
He assured traders that the Assembly remains committed to creating a safer and more convenient trading environment and fulfilling commitments made to market stakeholders.
Receiving the items, the President of the market, Mr. Opoku Afreh, described the gesture as historic, noting that it was the first time the Assembly had directly donated streetlights to the market.
He praised the AMA for listening to traders’ concerns and responding with practical support.
Mr. Afreh also used the occasion to encourage traders to cooperate with Assembly officials by paying approved fees and complying with market regulations.
He urged traders to keep payment receipts and channel any concerns through market leadership rather than engaging in confrontations with officials.
The intervention is expected to improve lighting conditions across sections of the market and support safer trading activities while strengthening collaboration between the Assembly and market operators.
