The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has delegated former President, John Dramani Mahama to represent him at an ECOWAS mini-summit in Abuja, Nigeria.

A statement signed by Ag Press Secretary to the President, Eugene Arhin said the former President would join President Mahamadu Buhari of Nigeria and Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at the mini-summit to find an antidote to The Gambian election dispute.

Former President Mahama was chosen as a co-mediator to convince Gambian President, Yahaya Jammeh who lost an election in early December 2016 to step down. This was after President Mahama accepted defeat in Ghana’s December 2016 elections.

Jammeh despite accepting defeat later called for fresh elections to be organized by a ‘God-fearing Electoral Commissioner’.

Since then, ECOWAS and world leaders have impressed on the man who ascended the presidency of Gambia in a Coup d’etat to step down.

“President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has requested ECOWAS co-mediator on Gambia, former President John Mahama, to represent him at the ECOWAS mini-summit to be hosted by the mediator, President Mahamadu Buhari in Abuja today, January 9, 2017,” the statement said in part.

It continued that the former President was delegated for the meeting because his continuous presence in the mediation would assist the process.

Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Presidents of Senegal and Sierra Leone would be at the summit as well.
