Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour has claimed that the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is among the numerous unseen hands who are supporting his campaign against the legalization of homosexuality in the country.
The MP has been at the forefront of calls on MPs to take a stand against any attempt to legalize homosexuality in Ghana.
He kick started his campaign following advocacy from a group of eight Ghanaians in Canada who petitioned the Canadian government to put pressure on Ghana to decriminalize homosexuality.
“…Without prejudice to the position of the Parliament of Ghana, Government of Ghana, any religious body or political party on the subject of homosexuality, lesbianism and bestiality, premised on my deepest convictions and principles as a Christian, Reverend Minister and a proud advocate of Jesus Christ and legislator, Member of Parliament for Assin South constituency, I hereby openly, and unequivocally declare my firm position against the views of the members of an advocacy group who on Thursday, August 17, 2017 sought to canvass support from certain powerful persons in institutions in Canada to put pressure on Ghana to decriminalize homosexuality,” he said at the time.
The MP was once again called upon to defend his campaign against homosexuality after the President could failed to state the position of the country on legalization of homosexuality in the country in an interview on Al Jazeera.
Asked why the country has failed to legalize homosexuality in the country, the president said until there is a strong call by the society for this to be done, there is no way the laws will be changed.
“This is a social, cultural issue, I don’t believe that in Ghana so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say ‘change it, let’s now have a new paradigm in Ghana.
“At the moment, I don’t feel, I don’t see that in Ghana there is that strong current of opinion that is saying this is something we need to deal with. It is not so far a matter that is on the agenda,” he added.
The response of the President has elicited criticisms from members of the public and NDC politicians in particular who insist the President is subtly calling for the legalization of homosexuality.
But the MP speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Monday said he does not doubt the position of the President on the issue as according to him, the President is never a supporter of the legalization of homosexuality in the country.
“The President has been behind my campaign against homosexuals in the country and there is no two ways about it…he recognizes that no single individuals can legalise homosexuality in Ghana because laws emanates from the people and that is exactly what he sought to communicate,” he told Akua Boajyewaa Yiadom.
The Law maker further called on Ghanaians to be rest assured that Parliament would resist calls for the legalization of gays as the 275 members are in the august house to represent the views of Ghanaians and not promote their interests.
