Taxi drivers at Anyaa are appealing for more bus stops on the stretch from Barnyard to Ablekuma, saying the lack of approved stops keeps putting them on the wrong side of the law.
They say the only bus stop on the road has been taken over by private car owners, who use it as a parking spot. With nowhere to stop, the drivers say they have to pull up wherever there is space to pick up and drop off passengers.
Because those spots are not approved bus stops, they say they are often arrested by police officers.
The drivers are asking the authorities to install enough bus stops along the stretch, so they can do their work without breaking the law.
The appeal comes as the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service prepares to roll out Traffitech-GH, its automated traffic enforcement system, on November 1, after moving the date from October 1.
The system uses cameras and handheld devices to detect offences, with electronic notices sent by SMS to the vehicle owner or driver. The MTTD has said it will complement manual enforcement by officers and not replace it.
The drivers spoke to Prince Owusu Asiedu on Adom Trotro.
