Members of the Council of State say the devastation caused by the recent floods in parts of Accra is far worse than they had anticipated after a personal inspection of affected communities.

Led by the Chairman of the Economic and Social Development Committee, H.R.M. Drolor Bosso Adamtey, the delegation toured several hard-hit areas, including Alajo, Avenor, Mallam-Gbawe, Adabraka, and Circle, where lives were lost and properties worth thousands of cedis destroyed.

During the visit, the team also observed that a construction site previously halted under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama was allegedly being reclaimed, with fresh walls erected and construction activities ongoing.

Addressing the media after the tour, H.R.M. Drolor Bosso Adamtey described the situation as alarming.

“It is worse than we thought. Seeing it ourselves and experiencing what is happening here, it is not good. We have to do everything necessary to make sure this problem is resolved,” he said.

Other members of the Council expressed concern over the extent of encroachment on waterways and buffer zones, stressing that the visit had given them a clearer understanding of the country’s perennial flooding challenges.

“I think the MCEs are overwhelmed, so their sector ministers must be concerned and involved to make sure they reclaim this land. Otherwise, the whole of Accra stands the danger of being submerged,” a member stated.

The Council members said their findings would inform the advice they present to government, emphasising that addressing the flood menace will require coordinated action among state institutions, strict enforcement of planning regulations, and the protection of lands designated as waterways and buffer zones.

The tour comes as recovery efforts continue in the capital following Monday’s devastating floods, which claimed several lives and displaced thousands of residents.
