Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has admitted that it was difficult to watch the Black Stars lose to The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana’s hopes of returning to the continental tournament in East Africa have suffered an early setback after the team failed to win either of their opening two matches.

The Black Stars began their Group C campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast in Bouaké before surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The back-to-back losses have left Ghana bottom of the group without a point and increased the pressure on the team to revive their qualifying campaign.

The poor start also preceded the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who left his position following the disappointing results.

Reflecting on Ghana’s defeat by The Gambia, Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, said the result had been particularly difficult to accept.

“I must admit that nobody would want to be in my situation when the Black Stars played against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium,” he said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme.

“It was difficult to watch the team lose. I could not believe what happened, but I am convinced the team will qualify for the AFCON tournament,” he added.

Ghana will seek to get their campaign back on track next month when they face Somalia in their Matchday Three and Four fixtures.

The two matches are scheduled to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium, with the Black Stars set to be led by an interim technical team announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

The four-time African champions will need to improve their results in the remaining qualifiers to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 tournament alive.
