Elders in Adaklu Waya and Adaklu Kpodzi in the Volta Region have called on the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Adaklu, Jerry Ameko, and other stakeholders to help intensify efforts to combat drug abuse in the district.

Speaking to Adom News, Mama Kalesi I, Sub-Queen Mother of the Adaklu Waya Traditional Council expressed concern about the growing use of illicit drugs among some young people in the community.

Mama Kalesi I warned that the situation could have serious consequences for the health, education, and future of the youth if urgent measures are not taken to address it.

The Sub-Queen Mother appealed to the DCE parents, traditional leaders, religious organisations, schools, and community members to join the fight by increasing public education on the dangers of drug abuse.

She also called for stronger support systems for young people struggling with addiction, stressing the need for counselling, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society.

Mama Kalesi further urged law enforcement agencies to intensify surveillance and clamp down on the sale and distribution of illicit drugs by some spots in the community.

For his part, Mr. Ameko acknowledged the concerns raised by the traditional authorities and said the Assembly is committed to work with relevant stakeholders to address the problem.

He called for a united community response, noting that the fight against drug abuse could not be left to one institution alone.

The elders, residents, and the Assembly pledged to collaborate with parents, schools, traditional authorities, religious bodies, and security agencies to protect the youth and promote a safer and healthier Adaklu Waya.
