Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has inspected completed repair and paving works on sections of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in the Central Business District (CBD) following concerns over potholes and road surface damage that had affected traffic flow and road safety.

The rehabilitation covered the Lava U-turn and the stretch between the Derby Avenue/Kwame Nkrumah Avenue intersection and the Selwyn Market Street/Kwame Nkrumah Avenue intersection.

The affected sections had developed severe abrasions and potholes, slowing vehicular movement and posing potential safety risks to motorists, pedestrians and other road users.

Speaking after the inspection, Mr Allotey expressed satisfaction with the completed works, describing the intervention as an important step towards improving road safety, easing congestion and enhancing mobility within the capital’s commercial centre.

He stressed the importance of maintaining road infrastructure, noting that better road conditions were necessary to support commercial activities, reduce travel delays and improve the safety and convenience of road users.

The Assembly said the completed works were expected to improve traffic flow around the Lava U-turn and adjoining intersections, which serve as important access points for commercial vehicles, traders and other road users.

The Mayor was accompanied on the inspection by the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Douglas N.K. Annoful, and the Metropolitan Director of Finance, Abeeku Amissah.

Before the repairs began, the Assembly announced the temporary closure of the affected sections to allow for the paving and other critical works needed to restore the road surface and improve its durability.

The Assembly has urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and use the rehabilitated sections responsibly to preserve the improvements.

The intervention forms part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to address infrastructure challenges and improve accessibility and safety within the metropolis.
