The Ghana government is funding the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League as part of efforts to strengthen domestic football, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams has confirmed.
Adams said the government’s financial support was aimed at helping Premier League clubs become financially sustainable and eventually operate without relying heavily on state funding.
The intervention comes as the Ghana Premier League continues to operate without a major commercial title sponsor, leaving clubs with limited financial backing in recent years.
Speaking to Max TV, Adams said government support would continue until clubs were in a position to manage their finances independently.
“Government is sponsoring it (GPL) and intends to continue to sponsor up to a point that the clubs can be on their feet,” Adams said.
The Buem MP said the government’s plans extended beyond providing short-term financial assistance to the top flight.
“Government is interested in building our domestic clubs and leagues,” he added.
The government’s involvement in the league was previously announced at the launch of the broadcaster for the 2025/26 season, when Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku disclosed the state’s investment in the competition.
Ahead of the 2026/27 season, each of the 18 Premier League clubs received GH¢1 million in government support.
The funding is intended to help clubs meet their operational costs while improving their financial stability and supporting the wider development of domestic football.
Adams indicated that once clubs become sufficiently self-sustaining, government resources could be redirected towards other areas of football development.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season began in September, with 18 clubs competing for the league title.
