The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has invited the leadership of the striking teacher unions to negotiations over their expired conditions of service.
The discussions, scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, 2026, will involve the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu disclosed this on Friday, October 2, after government held discussions with the three unions over issues underpinning their nationwide industrial action.
According to the Minister, the FWSC has formally invited the unions to begin negotiations on their expired conditions of service, also referred to as their collective agreement.
“The unions will return on Tuesday to the Fair Wages and Salary Commission for negotiation of their expired conditions of service or collective agreement,” Mr Iddrisu said.
He expressed optimism that the negotiations would be concluded within a week, noting that similar engagements had been undertaken with other organised labour groups.
“It is our expectation that negotiations will not exceed a week. It should not. And negotiations have already been carried on within the same spirit as was done for other unions in the country. So Fair Wages will engage them on Tuesday,” he added.
The development forms part of efforts to resolve the concerns that triggered the teacher unions’ nationwide strike, which began on September 25, 2026.
The unions have been demanding action on several outstanding issues, including promotion arrears, the 20 per cent deprived-area allowance and the renewal of their expired conditions of service.
The Education, Finance and Labour Ministers met the leadership of GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG on Friday as government intensifies efforts to resolve the impasse and restore teaching and learning in public schools.
