Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has summoned the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for a crisis meeting following the Black Stars’ poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The meeting is scheduled to take place today, October 2, as the government seeks to engage the football authorities over the team’s recent results and the wider state of the sport in Ghana.

Ghana have lost both of their opening Group C matches and currently sit bottom of the group without a point.

The four-time African champions began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast before suffering another setback against The Gambia.

The Black Stars took a 2-0 lead in their second qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium but collapsed in the second half to lose 4-2.

The disappointing results have increased pressure on the Ghana Football Association and the Black Stars’ technical set-up.

Ghana and coach Carlos Queiroz mutually agreed to part ways on Thursday, 1 October, after the Portuguese coach’s brief tenure.

Mr Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, has now called the GFA leadership to the meeting as the government looks for possible long-term solutions to the challenges facing Ghanaian football.

The discussions are expected to cover the Black Stars’ poor start to the AFCON qualifiers as well as broader concerns surrounding the country’s football administration and development.

Ghana must now improve their results in the remaining qualifiers if they are to secure a place at the 2027 AFCON, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The Black Stars are scheduled to return to action in October with a double-header against Somalia, with both matches due to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana are seeking to return to the continental tournament after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

The failure to qualify for the 2025 tournament ended Ghana’s run of appearances at the competition and has increased the importance of securing qualification for the 2027 edition.
