An eyewitness has described how a cooking incident may have triggered the major fire that continues to rage at Kofikrom in the North Kaneshie Industrial Area.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the witness said someone was cooking in the area when an explosion suddenly occurred, followed by the outbreak of fire.

It is unclear whether the person left the food unattended.

The witness said residents rushed to a nearby company to fetch water in an attempt to put out the flames, but they were stopped.

According to him, officials at the company told them they “don’t care.”

Fire Service personnel later arrived, but access to the scene proved difficult.

The eyewitness said some cargo trucks had blocked the road and the drivers refused to move their vehicles to clear the way for emergency responders.

ECG has since cut power supply to the area.

The witness also attributed the intensity of the fire to the large quantities of plastic materials being sold around the location, which he said helped fuel the flames.
