The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), operator of the Aayalolo Bus Service, will from Tuesday, September 29, 2026, introduce a police escort system to improve the speed and reliability of its services.
The initiative, being piloted as a contraflow system, will operate during peak hours in the morning and evening.
It is expected to allow Aayalolo buses to move more efficiently through traffic, reduce travel times and improve adherence to fixed schedules.
The move forms part of efforts by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to make public transportation in Accra more secure, reliable and convenient.
Speaking to the media ahead of the launch, GAPTE Managing Director, Awudu Dawuda, said the contraflow arrangement would be supported by a fixed timetable across the four major corridors served by Aayalolo.
He explained that police escorts would help buses navigate congested sections of the city more quickly, ensuring commuters reach their destinations within scheduled times.
Mr Dawuda said GAPTE is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders to ensure the pilot programme succeeds ahead of a possible full rollout.
The Aayalolo Bus Service was introduced as a Bus Rapid Transit system to help ease traffic congestion in Accra while providing commuters with an affordable and efficient mass transportation option.
