The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service says it has issued more than 10,000 cautions to motorists for overspeeding during the trial phase of the new Traffitech-GH enforcement system.
Director of Research, Training, and Education at the MTTD, ACP Alexander Obeng, disclosed this on Adom TV’s The Big Agenda.
Traffitech-GH is an automated traffic enforcement system that uses roadside cameras, sensors, and mobile devices to detect and capture images or videos of road traffic violations.
The system is scheduled to become operational nationwide from October 1, 2026.
ACP Obeng said the police began testing the equipment after its official launch by Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno on September 15, 2026.
He explained that the equipment would be deployed at selected points on major roads, with overspeeding being one of the key offences targeted.
According to him, motorists who exceed the prescribed speed limit will be automatically captured by the system, after which an electronic notice indicating the offence and applicable fine will be sent to the offender’s mobile phone.
ACP Obeng said the MTTD is currently engaging motorists and educating them on how the system works ahead of its full implementation.
He expressed confidence that the automated enforcement system would contribute significantly to improving road safety and encouraging motorists to comply with speed limits.
He added that offenders would have up to 15 days to either challenge the notice or pay the prescribed fine.
Failure to comply within the stipulated period, he said, would attract an additional penalty.
