Six Senior High and Technical Schools in the Kwahu South Municipality are facing severe shortages of beds, furniture, dining tables and chairs, forcing some students to sleep on classroom floors.
The situation came to light when the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu South, David Effah Osei Bonsu, popularly known as Ato Plane, visited the schools to assess the reopening and admission of students.
The affected institutions are Obo Senior High School, Mpraeso Senior High School, Asakraka St. Paul’s Senior High School, Bepong Senior High School, Obomeng Technical Institute and Asakraka Technical Institute.
The MCE’s visit was also aimed at identifying challenges confronting the schools as first-year students reported for the new academic year.
Speaking on behalf of the six institutions, Headmaster of Mpraeso SHS, James Afedu, said the admission process was progressing smoothly but expressed concern over the shortage of essential furniture and residential facilities.
He said the lack of beds had become particularly critical, with some students reportedly having to sleep on classroom floors.
Mr Effah Osei Bonsu acknowledged the concerns raised by the schools and said he personally witnessed some of the challenges during his tour.
He expressed concern about the conditions confronting students and assured the school authorities that the Municipal Assembly would engage the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to seek support for the provision of furniture and other infrastructure needs.
The MCE also pledged to follow up on the matter to help ensure that students have a conducive environment for both learning and boarding.
