Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has appealed to First Lady Lordina Mahama and Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to intervene in the continued detention of senior nursing officer Salomey Awity Baffoe in the ongoing Ghana Jollof case.
Ms Baffoe, a mother of three, was denied bail by the High Court in Accra on Thursday, September 24, after she was charged with abetment of crime, to wit, publication of false news.
Her case is linked to investigations into the Ghana Jollof TikTok account, which the police identify as being operated by Barbara Asantewaa Kodua.
The court, in denying bail, cited the cyber-related nature of the case and concerns that her release could potentially interfere with ongoing investigations.
According to the police, Ms Baffoe allegedly assisted Ms Kodua in disseminating videos and recruiting others to redistribute the content.
Investigators also claim that financial transactions were found between the two women.
Reacting to the court proceedings, Mrs Appiagyei expressed concern about the impact of Ms Baffoe’s detention on her children and urged the First Lady and Vice President to intervene.
“It’s rather unfortunate as we speak now we are using women against other women. I would like to make a passionate appeal to our First Lady and our Vice President that what is happening is very disturbing, especially in Ghana where most of the women are single mothers,” she told JoyNews.
She said Ms Baffoe’s continued detention was particularly worrying because of her responsibilities as a mother and the need to cater for her children’s education and welfare.
“This is a pretty serious occasion of a woman who is single-handedly taking care of the children and she has to see to it that her children attends school,” she said.
