Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has commended President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for their leadership in advancing the global reparatory justice agenda.
President Lula made the commendation during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he praised Ghana’s efforts in leading the international community towards recognition of the historical injustices associated with the transatlantic slave trade.
The commendation comes as Ghana continues to push for further action following the adoption of the Ghana-led resolution by the United Nations.
President Mahama has been leading efforts to build international support for reparatory justice and to encourage the global community to move beyond recognition towards concrete measures to address the consequences of the transatlantic slave trade and related historical injustices.
Ghana has featured prominently in discussions during the current UN General Assembly session, with several references made to the country’s role in advancing the reparatory justice agenda.
President Mahama has also been holding a series of bilateral meetings with leaders from various countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The engagements are aimed at strengthening Ghana’s bilateral relations, deepening cooperation and exploring opportunities for partnerships in areas of mutual interest.
Among the countries involved in the bilateral engagements are Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kenya, Serbia, Mali, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Guinea and Germany.
The meetings are also expected to pave the way for agreements and memoranda of understanding between Ghana and some of the countries as part of efforts to advance the country’s diplomatic and development interests.
