Former Ghana international Yaw Preko says the Accra Sports Stadium should be renovated rather than demolished, describing the historic venue as the country’s equivalent of Wembley Stadium.
Calls to tear down and rebuild the stadium have intensified in recent weeks over concerns about its deteriorating condition, with some critics describing the facility as a “death trap” following a recent inspection.
Speaking after the Black Stars Legends’ 6-3 defeat by UMB Speed Stars at the Adjiringano Astro Turf, Preko argued that the stadium’s heritage should be preserved.
“The Accra Sports Stadium is our Wembley. We can’t demolish it, but we can break some places and add other things,” he told reporters.
The former Anderlecht and Fenerbahçe forward said authorities should focus on reconstructing damaged sections and upgrading the facility instead of replacing it entirely.
Despite concerns over its condition, the stadium remains approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international matches as Ghana prepares for its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
