Ipswich Town manager Gary O’Neil has backed Abdul Fatawu Issahaku following the Ghana winger’s red card in Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat by Everton, describing him as a “great addition” to the club.
The 22-year-old, who joined Ipswich from Leicester City during the summer transfer window, was sent off after picking up a second yellow card in the second half at Goodison Park.
Issahaku was first cautioned in the 35th minute before receiving a second booking for simulation in the 67th minute, reducing Ipswich to 10 men as they chased an equaliser.
Despite the dismissal, O’Neil praised the winger’s impact since arriving at Portman Road and believes the Ghana international will learn from the experience.
“I’ve spoken to him; he’s a young lad. You can see he is anticipating some contact. I’ve seen them given and I’ve seen them not given,” O’Neil told Premier League Productions.
“He understands the importance of him being on the pitch and us keeping 11 on the pitch, but he has been a great addition.”
Issahaku has made five appearances for Ipswich since his arrival and has contributed one assist.
The former Sporting CP player is expected to join Ghana later this week for the Black Stars’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ivory Coast and The Gambia before a friendly against Morocco in October.
