The Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral has been given until October 31, 2026, to hand the project site over to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The directive comes after President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to dissolve the Board with immediate effect.
In a letter signed by the sector Minister, Mahama Ayariga, the Chairman and members of the Board were directed to work with the project consultant to complete the handover by the deadline.
This directive formally brings the Board’s tenure to an end, after months of uncertainty over its status.
In July 2025, government announced plans to dissolve the National Cathedral Secretariat and begin the process of disbanding the Board following an audit into the project.
However, some members of the Board remained in office, saying they had not received formal written instructions asking them to leave.
The latest letter from Mr Ayariga now directs the trustees to hand over the site and formally end their involvement in the project.
According to the Ministry, taking over the site will allow government to decide what to do with the National Cathedral project, which has remained stalled amid questions over its construction, financing and management.
The minister also thanked the Board members for their contribution to promoting the Christian faith in Ghana on behalf of President Mahama.
