The Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has called for an investigation into the department’s digitisation programme, questioning what has become of the $1.7 million reportedly invested in the project under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
According to him, although the digitisation initiative was a good step, there is little on the ground to show for the money reportedly sunk into the project.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Opoku said he personally visited the facility and found only four computers, despite being informed that additional equipment was expected to be provided as part of an expansion of the project.
“Let me be frank. About $1.7 million has been sunk into the Rent Control digitisation project, but when I went there, I found nothing except four computers,” he said.
He said officials later indicated that the project was to be expanded to include tablets and additional computers, but his attempts to obtain the equipment for the department proved unsuccessful.
“They later told us they wanted to expand the project and provide tablets and other computers. I requested these devices, but I was told there was nothing,” he stated.
Mr Opoku said the situation raises serious questions about the management of the funds allocated to the digitisation programme and must be thoroughly investigated.
He is therefore calling for accountability, insisting that those found responsible must face consequences.
“Heads must roll on this matter. We have to investigate and find out what happened to the money and the equipment,” he added.
Mr Opoku stressed that the Rent Control Department needs adequate technological resources to fully digitise its operations and effectively serve tenants and landlords across the country.
