Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye, has dismissed concerns about a possible parliamentary bid in the Klottey Korle Constituency, insisting that he has every right to contest the seat if he decides to.
Speaking on Accra-based Starr FM, Mr Neequaye said he has a long-standing history within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), having served in various capacities at the constituency level.
He said he first became involved in the party at the age of 17 as a branch secretary but was not allowed to register at the time.
“If I’m eyeing that seat, it’s not against any law. I have the right to contest for that seat.”
He explained that his political involvement dates back several years, including serving as a polling agent and later occupying various constituency positions.
“This is my third time as a constituency executive. At age 17, I was a branch secretary for the NDC in the Korle Klottey Constituency, but I wasn’t allowed to register.
“In 2004, I was a polling agent, even though I wasn’t allowed to vote. I have been a communications officer, and I am currently the constituency Vice Chairman for the constituency,” he added.
Mr Neequaye, however, stated that he has no intention of contesting the Klottey Korle parliamentary seat in the 2028 elections, although he did not completely rule out a future bid.
“If I want to contest for that constituency seat, I am free. I am good and enough to do it, but I have said 2028; I’m not contesting. I don’t know if the Lord will change my mind for subsequent years, but for 2028, I’m not contesting.”
He stressed that circumstances could change in the future and maintained that contesting the seat would not amount to breaking any law.
“Even 2028, never say never. I can decide to contest; I don’t break any law.”
Mr Neequaye further highlighted his roots in the constituency, saying he is an indigene of Klottey Korle and has strong ties to Osu.
“I am an indigene of Klottey Korle. I am from Osu. My hometown is Osu. I cut across all the four traditional areas of Osu.”
He said he has always been open about his political ambitions and would publicly declare his intentions if he decides to contest.
“If I want to contest today, I don’t go against any law. For me, I don’t hide my political ambition. If I want to contest, I will say it clearly: I want to contest,” he said.
Mr Neequaye said he has not yet made a decision to contest and urged the incumbent MP for Klottey Korle, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, not to be concerned about his political activities.
“For now, I have not made up my mind, so Dr Zanetor should relax. The way she is going around, she should relax. I am not going to contest her,” he added.
