President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called for stronger measures to protect journalists and improve their welfare, stressing that a vibrant democracy depends on the active work of the media.
According to him, journalists continue to face various forms of attacks in the line of duty, making their safety and security a major concern.
Mr Dwumfour said the GJA remained committed to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring that media practitioners could work in a safe and conducive environment.
He said the Association would continue to collaborate with civil society organisations and other stakeholders to promote press freedom and safeguard the rights of journalists.
The GJA President also underscored the importance of journalists’ welfare, describing it as an essential part of the future and sustainability of the journalism profession.
He urged journalists to embrace innovation and adapt to changes in the media landscape to remain relevant and effective in their work.
Mr Dwumfour further announced the GJA’s intention to collaborate with the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) to strengthen journalism and advance the interests of journalists across the continent.
He made the remarks in connection with the FAJ Steering Committee meeting currently being held in Accra, bringing together stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting journalism and media practitioners.
The meeting is focusing on key issues including journalists’ welfare, ethical journalism, press freedom and the exchange of experiences among journalists and media organisations.
Mr Dwumfour said the conference would also provide an opportunity for participants to deliberate on measures to strengthen journalism, improve the welfare of journalists and enhance the safety and protection of media practitioners.
He reiterated the GJA’s commitment to working with local and international partners to advance press freedom and create a more supportive environment for journalists to perform their professional responsibilities.
