Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, is demanding the immediate release of a woman reportedly arrested over allegations that she operates the TikTok account, Ghana Jollof.

Mr Mohammed argues that the woman may have been wrongly detained, pointing to continued activity on the account following her reported arrest.

According to him, the development raises questions about whether the detained woman is actually the person behind the account, which has been critical of government officials.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Mr Mohammed said the woman is a health professional with infants under her care and urged the authorities to release her.

“An arrest has been made on an innocent woman who has infants that she takes care of and also a health professional, purported to be ‘Ghana Jollof’.

Subsequently after the arrest the person they are looking for is on TikTok again telling them that that is not the person; with the same voice and saying what she usually say,” he said.

Mr Mohammed said lawyers had been engaged to provide legal assistance to the woman and questioned why she remained in custody despite the account continuing to post.

“Yesterday, we had several calls to get lawyers to for her. I don’t think up till now they have released her. Does it mean that the person is in the cells insulting them. This is pure politics. Yes, our lawyers have been brought in to assist the woman,” he said.

He described the reported arrest as an infringement of the woman’s rights and called for what he considers unnecessary actions against citizens to stop.

“I think these people want to break down this country. The NDC want to break down the country. These necessary things that they are doing must stop,” he said.
