Authorities have intensified monitoring of traffic on major roads in Accra as ongoing drainage construction under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project continues to affect vehicular movement.
Drone footage captured during today’s monitoring exercise is being reviewed to provide authorities with a clearer picture of traffic conditions and identify areas experiencing significant congestion.
The exercise is aimed at helping traffic management authorities assess the impact of road closures and construction activities and determine measures to ease congestion.
Although the overall traffic situation remains manageable, congestion has begun building up on some major routes, particularly during the evening peak period as workers return home.
Among the affected areas are Graphic Road from Accra Central, the stretch between Obetsebi Lamptey and Mortuary Road, as well as the route from Obetsebi Lamptey towards Circle.
The increased traffic is being attributed largely to the movement of commuters heading home after work.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with drone surveillance being used to assess traffic flow and support decisions on traffic management.
Meanwhile, some commuters travelling towards Kasoa have reportedly opted to walk portions of the journey to avoid being caught up in the increasing congestion.
The authorities are expected to use information gathered from the monitoring exercise to identify possible interventions to improve traffic flow while the GARID drainage works continue.
