Residents, commuters and farmers along the Hodzo-Aviefe road in the Ho Central Municipality of the Volta Region are appealing to the government to intervene and ensure the completion of an abandoned bridge project on the route.
The residents say the bridge, which was started by a contractor but has since been left unattended, has made movement between Hodzo, Aviefe and adjoining communities increasingly difficult.
For farmers in the area, the situation is affecting their ability to transport produce from their farms to market centres, with some saying vehicles are unable to reach their farms because of the poor condition of the route.
They said there have been instances where harvested foodstuffs purchased by buyers are left in the bush because the buyers’ vehicles cannot access the farms.
The residents fear that continued delays in completing the bridge could worsen post-harvest losses and put further pressure on the livelihoods of people who depend on farming and the road for their daily activities.
They are therefore calling on President John Dramani Mahama and the relevant authorities to intervene and ensure that the contractor returns to the site to complete the project.
Speaking to Adom News correspondent Odehyeba Owusu Job during a visit to the area, a farmer said completing the bridge would restore access to farms, ease transportation and support economic activities in the affected communities.
He urged the government to treat the project as a matter of urgency to prevent further losses and improve living conditions for residents who rely on the route.
