The Asutifi North District Assembly in the Ahafo Region has supported 37 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the district with items to help improve their livelihoods.
The beneficiaries received a range of items, including chest freezers, fufu pounding machines, industrial sewing machines, wheelchairs, rabbits, sheep, bags of onions and assorted provisions.
Speaking to Adom News at Kenyasi, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hafiz Dauda, commended the government for increasing the allocation for the disability fund from three to five percent.
He said the increase had enabled the Assembly to procure more and better-quality items for PWDs in the district.
Mr Dauda urged the beneficiaries to put the items to good use, explaining that those who had benefited would not be considered in subsequent distributions until other PWDs in the district had also been supported.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, also encouraged PWDs to take advantage of government interventions to improve their livelihoods and become economically productive like everyone else.
The Social Welfare Director, Monica Osei Mensah, said measures had been put in place to prevent beneficiaries from selling the items they had received.
She said the Social Welfare Department would closely monitor the beneficiaries to ensure that the support was properly utilised and delivered value for money.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the District Assembly and the government, saying the items would help them improve their livelihoods.
