The Minister of Local Government, Mahama Ayariga, says the ongoing waste evacuation exercise at Jamestown will be treated as a national emergency, with equipment from districts across the country being mobilised to Accra to support the clean-up.
Speaking at the second Ecumenical Convention in Accra, the Minister said the scale of the sanitation challenge requires a coordinated national response.
He disclosed that the military, together with several ministries and government agencies, is being mobilised to support the operation and ensure the swift evacuation of the accumulated waste.
Mr. Ayariga, however, stressed that clearing the waste alone would not provide a lasting solution to Ghana’s sanitation crisis.
He said the country must confront the attitudes, apathy and indiscipline that continue to contribute to poor sanitation and indiscriminate disposal of waste.
The Minister called for a change in mindset among Ghanaians, emphasising that maintaining clean communities requires the collective responsibility of citizens, local authorities and government.
He said the Jamestown exercise should therefore go beyond the immediate evacuation of waste and serve as a catalyst for a broader national effort to improve sanitation and promote responsible environmental practices.
