Nigerian Afrobeats singer Joeboy has revealed that he would prefer to marry early, but intends to keep his marriage and family life away from the public eye if he settles down soon.
The 29-year-old singer shared the unusual plan during an interview with British media personality Madame Joyce, explaining that he is attracted to the idea of starting a family young and entering his 40s with teenage children.
Joeboy said his perspective on early marriage was influenced by comments from Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson, who had spoken about wishing he had married earlier despite his reputation as a ladies’ man.
“I saw an interview of Timini. He’s like the ideal playboy; almost all the girls claim to love him, and he was like, he wished he got married early. I was like, if you’re a playboy and you can say this, that means marrying early might actually be nice,” he said.
For Joeboy, the appeal lies in building a family with someone he genuinely loves rather than waiting until a later stage in life.
“Marrying early to someone who you genuinely love is going to be cute. Being 40 and having a 16-year-old kid is cute,” he said.
The singer, however, stressed that early marriage should not be treated as a trend or something to pursue simply because it seems attractive.
“But marriage is not really about whenever it feels cool. If it just feels right to you and you love the person, do it,” he added.
While Joeboy made it clear that he would personally choose to marry early, he said fans and the wider public may not know about it if it happens anytime soon.
“Personally, I would rather get married early. But if I get married right now, nobody is going to know,” he said.
He suggested that he could keep the marriage completely private until he and his partner have built a sizeable family, joking that the public might only discover his secret much later.
“Maybe when I have like three kids, people will now find out that Joeboy has a whole family somewhere,” he added.
The comments offer a glimpse into a side of the singer’s life he appears keen to protect from the intense public attention that comes with his music career.
