The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has commenced a preliminary investigation into a purported memorandum alleging that Deputy Minority Leader and Asokwa MP, Patricia Appiagyei, returned GH¢70,000 allegedly given to her in connection with the vetting of ministerial and Supreme Court nominees.
The document, which is circulating in the media, is purportedly authored by Patricia Appiagyei and addressed to Minority Chief Whip and Nsawam/Adoagyiri MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.
According to the purported memorandum, the money was allegedly allocated to the MP as an advance from the Majority Chief Whip in relation to the vetting of two ministerial nominees and three Supreme Court nominees by Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
The OSP said it has taken note of the document and is investigating its authenticity, the source of the alleged funds and the purpose for which the money was allegedly provided.
The Office said its decision follows the constitutional importance of Parliament’s Appointments Committee and the need to safeguard the integrity and credibility of the vetting process.
It further noted that the document purportedly raises concerns about the source of the funds and suggests that the alleged conduct could have the hallmarks of extortion of nominees.
As part of the preliminary inquiry, the OSP has dispatched a communication inviting Patricia Appiagyei to appear before the Office and assist with the investigation.
The Special Prosecutor stressed that it is actively investigating all allegations of extortion involving Members of Parliament.
