The Bono East Regional Police have arrested two suspects after intercepting a Kia Rhino vehicle loaded with suspected contraband items at Jema on September 1, 2026.
According to a press release from the Ghana Police Service, the operation was carried out by the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate in collaboration with the national headquarters in Accra.
Acting on actionable intelligence, officers intercepted the vehicle, registered UE 819-26, at around 4:00 p.m. as it traveled from Nalerigu towards Kumasi.
The driver, identified as Fusini Danaa, and his mate were taken into custody after a search of the truck, which was ostensibly transporting maize. The search uncovered 321 boxes of foreign cigarettes, including 40 boxes of Royals, 175 boxes of Oris, and 106 boxes of Gold Seal, along with 23 bags of soya beans, 39 bags of groundnut husks, and 21 bags of millet. Significantly, officers also discovered 100 containers of a substance suspected to be sodium cyanide.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment was handed to the driver by an individual at Bentri, near Nalerigu, for delivery to a customer in Kumasi.
The operation was supported by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOB), the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (CEPS), and Defence Intelligence (DI).
Given that the suspected sodium cyanide was transported alongside food items, officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) have taken samples for laboratory analysis due to potential public health risks.
The vehicle and all seized items have been secured, and police investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the consignment.
The Bono East Regional Command praised the cooperation among the agencies involved and reaffirmed its commitment to fighting crime and ensuring public safety.
