The planned drainage improvement works and temporary road closure on the busy Kaneshie-Winneba Highway will not proceed without the involvement of key government ministries, the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has stated.
The Minister made the declaration on Thursday during a monitoring visit to Kaneshie to inspect preparations by the contractor ahead of the commencement of the project.
After walking the stretch from the Kaneshie-Pamprom Junction to the Accra Academy area, Mr Adjei said the scope and potential impact of the project went far beyond a routine construction exercise.
According to him, the 1,500-metre stretch earmarked for the drainage works lies on one of Ghana’s critical highways, and any road closure without proper planning could create serious disruptions and pose a national security concern.
He expressed dissatisfaction with some of the previous work executed by the contractor expected to undertake the project and warned that potential challenges arising from the construction must be addressed before the work begins.
“This is not just about Works and Housing. The nature of this work is a national security issue,” Mr Adjei stated.
He insisted that the Ministries of Finance, Roads and Highways, and National Security must be consulted and involved in the planning process before construction commences.
The Minister stressed the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to managing the project to minimise traffic congestion, protect public safety and prevent disruptions along the Kaneshie-Winneba corridor during the construction period.
He said the government would therefore not allow the road closure to proceed without adequate preparations and coordination among the relevant institutions.
