The government plans to redevelop the slum along the Korle Lagoon in Accra into high-rise container housing as part of efforts to tackle sanitation and public health challenges in the area.
Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, announced the plan during a visit to the site.
The proposed redevelopment will follow a military-led exercise to evacuate residents and clear the dumpsite, with the accumulated waste expected to be transported to the Adepa Waste Management Centre at Nsawam.
The project will also involve the dredging of the Korle Lagoon to improve its sanitary condition and address longstanding environmental challenges in the area.
Mr Ayariga said the government was determined to restore the area and create a cleaner and safer environment for residents.
He acknowledged that the clearing exercise could face resistance from some residents but expressed confidence that the initiative would receive broad public support.
“Those of us who want to clear it in Accra here, we are far more than those who want to resist clearing the mess,” he said.
The Minister said the redevelopment forms part of broader government efforts to improve sanitation, protect public health and transform heavily polluted areas within the capital.
He said the proposed housing project would provide an alternative use for the area while contributing to efforts to address the sanitation challenges associated with the current settlement.
