Thirteen people died in a crash involving a Toyota Hiace and a Ford Transit on the Accra-Aflao highway at MotherKope, near God’s Love Herbal Clinic, on Wednesday morning.
The crash, which also left 18 people injured, occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, when the two vehicles, travelling in opposite directions, collided on a hill.
The Toyota Hiace, with registration number GX 3186-20, was travelling from Accra towards Aflao, while the Ford Transit, with registration number GW 5558-23, was heading from Aflao to Accra.
The Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer Grade II (DO II), Ebenezer Yenzu, has explained that preliminary information indicates that the front of the Ford Transit crashed into the side of the Hiace as the Ford ascended the hill and the Hiace descended.
He said the collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles, adding that the front and doors of the Hiace were badly mangled, while the Ford Transit was left severely wrecked.
DO II Yenzu said the driver of the Hiace was among those injured.
He explained that firefighters from Sege received a distress call at 5:58 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 6:06 a.m. to commence rescue and extrication operations.
He added that the crew worked to remove victims trapped in the wreckage and transported all 18 injured persons to the Sege Polyclinic for medical attention.
Some of the injured victims were subsequently referred to the Ada East District Hospital at FaithKope for further treatment.
DO II Yenzu said that after the rescue operation, firefighters moved the wrecked vehicles to the side of the road, cleared debris from the highway and washed away blood spilled at the scene, following which traffic flow was restored on the affected stretch.
