The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has warned operators of mortuary facilities in the Volta Region to regularise their operations or risk sanctions in accordance with the law.
Deputy Registrar of MoFFA, Dr Philip Sarpong, said the agency would not hesitate to enforce the relevant laws against facilities that fail to comply with established standards and regulations.
He issued the warning in an interview with Adom News Correspondent, Odehyeba Owusu Job, at the end of a three-day compliance exercise conducted at selected mortuary facilities in the Volta Region.
According to Dr Sarpong, the exercise was aimed at assessing the level of compliance among mortuary facilities while providing management with guidance on measures required to improve their operations.
He urged operators to take MoFFA’s directives seriously and ensure that their facilities meet the required standards.
Dr Sarpong also cautioned the youth, particularly those involved in funeral activities, against the maltreatment of corpses during burial ceremonies.
He condemned practices that disrespect the remains of deceased persons and urged young people to treat corpses with dignity and respect, regardless of the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Adidome Hospital welcomes MoFFA guidance
Meanwhile, the Head of Administration at the Adidome Government Hospital, Samuel Adjei, has expressed appreciation to the MoFFA team for visiting the facility and providing professional guidance on its mortuary operations.
Mr Adjei said management would take the advice and recommendations from the agency seriously and work towards implementing them to improve the facility.
He also appealed to other institutions and relevant agencies to emulate MoFFA by regularly visiting health facilities, offering professional guidance and monitoring their operations.
According to him, continuous engagement and support from regulatory bodies would motivate healthcare workers and help institutions improve the quality of services they provide.
The three-day compliance exercise formed part of MoFFA’s efforts to monitor mortuary facilities across the country and ensure that operators comply with the laws, standards and regulations governing their operations.
