The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has begun a two-day compliance inspection of selected mortuary facilities in the Volta Region as part of efforts to ensure adherence to national standards and regulations.
The exercise covers several facilities, including the mortuaries of Battor Catholic Hospital, Keta Government Hospital, Central Aflao Hospital, Hossana Hospital at Agbozume, St. Anthony’s Catholic Hospital at Dzodze, Sacred Heart Catholic Hospital at Abor, and Adidome District Hospital.
The inspection is aimed at assessing how well the facilities comply with regulations governing the operation and management of mortuaries and funeral homes across the country.
Speaking to Adom News during the exercise, Deputy Registrar of MoFFA, Dr Philip Sarpong, who led the inspection team, said the visit was intended to assess the condition and operations of the facilities while engaging hospital management and staff on key issues.
He said the team was examining areas including infrastructure, equipment, sanitation, record-keeping, as well as the appropriate handling and preservation of human remains.
According to Dr Sarpong, the exercise would also help the agency identify challenges and gaps that could affect the effective management of mortuary facilities and recommend measures to address them.
He explained that regular inspections and engagement with facility managers formed part of MoFFA’s mandate to regulate mortuaries and funeral facilities and ensure operators comply with established standards.
Dr Sarpong said consistent monitoring was necessary to promote professionalism, dignity and proper practices in the handling and preservation of human remains.
During the first day of the exercise, the team commended the Keta Government Hospital for its level of compliance with the required standards and regulations.
Dr Sarpong, however, encouraged the hospital to sustain its efforts and continue improving, noting that MoFFA would conduct further inspections in the future.
The Acting Medical Superintendent of Keta Municipal Hospital, Dr Anim Emmanuel, expressed appreciation to the MoFFA team for the inspection and the commendation.
He assured the agency that the hospital would continue to comply with the required regulations and standards to ensure proper management of its mortuary facility.
