The government is taking steps to establish a state-owned gold mining company as part of efforts to increase state participation in Ghana’s gold industry, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has disclosed.
Mr Gyamfi said the initiative would begin with intensified exploration to identify areas with commercially viable gold deposits that could support direct state participation in mining.
Speaking at the National Mining Dialogue 2026 in Accra, he said GoldBod was working with the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to undertake geological exploration across selected areas of the country.
According to him, the exercise is intended to provide the geological data needed to determine locations where the state can establish and operate its own mines.
He explained that once viable deposits are identified, the government would proceed with the necessary processes to establish the state-owned mining company.
Mr Gyamfi disclosed that exploration is currently being conducted at Binsre in the Amansie area, where the government is assessing the gold potential of the locality.
He said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to ensure that Ghana derives greater economic value from its mineral resources by increasing direct state involvement in the gold mining value chain.
The proposed state-owned mining company, when established, is expected to give government a more direct role in gold production and potentially create additional opportunities for employment, local value addition and revenue generation.
Mr Gyamfi said the ongoing exploration would help determine the commercial viability of potential mining sites before the government commits resources to large-scale operations.
