The government will procure 100 new ambulances for the National Ambulance Service (NAS) in 2027 as part of efforts to strengthen emergency medical services across the country.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh made the announcement during the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat in Ho in the Volta Region.

According to the Minister, the acquisition of the 100 ambulances will significantly increase the operational capacity of the National Ambulance Service and improve access to pre-hospital emergency care nationwide.

Mr Akandoh also disclosed that 30 ambulances recently retrieved from the Ghana Air Force Base at Burma Camp and handed over for refurbishment will be added to the national fleet once rehabilitation is completed.

He said additional funding will also be provided to repair and maintain existing ambulances to keep more vehicles operational and available for emergency response.

The Minister further called for the speedy completion of the Legal Instrument (LI) for the National Ambulance Service, saying the regulatory framework is important to the Service’s effective operation and long-term development.

The retreat brought together board chairpersons, chief executives of health agencies, directors and senior management officials to assess the sector’s performance and discuss measures to improve healthcare delivery.

The NAS was represented at the retreat by its Board Chairman, Nana Baffour Kotei Kutin Sraman II, and Chief Executive Officer, Dr George Kojo Owusu.

The Ministry said the retreat provided an opportunity for health sector agencies to review progress, strengthen coordination and set priorities for improving healthcare delivery.
