Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has denied allegations that its staff were threatened or instructed to withhold data on river turbidity and pollution levels.
The company said the allegations were contained in a video circulating on social media.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 17, 2026, GWL said it conducts internal turbidity tests as part of its water treatment process and shuts down treatment plants when turbidity levels exceed safe thresholds.
It, however, clarified that it does not hold official data on natural river bodies.
“GWL does not hold official data on natural river bodies,” the company stated.
According to GWL, responsibility for monitoring natural river bodies and maintaining turbidity data rests with the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The company also disputed claims by the journalist that he was denied access to information at its Kwanyako Treatment Plant.
GWL said its official records showed that the journalist did not visit the facility.
The company further rejected claims that the Presidency had directed it to withhold river turbidity data.
“It is therefore totally untrue that the Presidency has directed GWL to withhold river turbidity data,” it stated.
GWL urged the public to distinguish between the respective mandates of the water utility, the WRC and the EPA when assessing information relating to river pollution and turbidity.
The company also urged the public to treat the claims contained in the circulating video with caution.
