Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie has questioned the prospect of Desmond Ofei being appointed as the next head coach of the Black Stars.
Carlos Queiroz, who took charge of Ghana on a short-term contract following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March, is expected to leave the role after the expiration of his four-month deal signed in April.
The Portuguese coach guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where the Black Stars reached the last 32.
With Ghana preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Ofei, who is currently with the Black Meteors preparing for the Olympic Games qualifiers, has emerged as one of the leading candidates to take charge of the senior national team.
However, Afriyie, a former chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, has expressed reservations about the prospect of handing the job to the former Ghana Under-20 coach.

“If today we are looking for a coach for the Black Stars and Desmond Ofei is the answer, then we have a problem,” he said.
Afriyie also criticised Queiroz’s tactical approach despite the Portuguese coach helping Ghana reach the knockout phase of the World Cup.
“As for Carlos Queiroz, I don’t like his defensive approach. It’s old-fashioned,” he added.
The Ghana Football Association is expected to decide on Queiroz’s future as the Black Stars prepare to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana will reassemble in September for the qualifiers, with the team aiming to return to the continental tournament after failing to qualify for the 2025 edition.
