Twenty-eight commercial and private vehicle drivers have been fined GH¢540 each by the Kasoa Akweley District Court for using unauthorised emergency lights, including “folk” lights.
The convictions followed a special enforcement operation conducted by the Kasoa Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) along the Kasoa-Winneba road.
The exercise was led by the MTTD Commander, Superintendent Hannah Adjei, as part of efforts to enforce road traffic regulations and improve safety on the highway.
According to the Police, the use of unauthorised emergency sirens and “folk” lights by motorists is prohibited under road traffic regulations.
Motorists were previously given a one-month grace period to remove the devices from their vehicles and comply with the directive.
However, some drivers allegedly continued to use the unauthorised lighting systems after the grace period, resulting in their arrest and prosecution.
Speaking after the court proceedings, Police Prosecutor at the Kasoa Akweley District Court, Chief Inspector Cephas Atsor, said the fines were intended to serve as a deterrent to other motorists.
He warned drivers against disregarding road traffic regulations and urged them to remove all unauthorised lighting and emergency devices from their vehicles.
Chief Inspector Atsor said the enforcement exercise forms part of a nationwide Police operation aimed at ensuring compliance with road traffic laws and promoting safety and sanity on Ghana’s roads.
