The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of TUC (TEWU-TUC) has given the government a two-week ultimatum to address what it describes as the persistent neglect and unfair treatment of non-teaching staff in Ghana’s education sector.
The union says non-teaching staff across the Ghana Education Service, public and technical universities and other educational institutions continue to face challenges despite their important contribution to the education system.
Among the concerns are delayed payment of salaries, alleged discriminatory practices, poor working conditions, limited career progression opportunities and inadequate recognition.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Deputy General Secretary of TEWU-TUC, Gifty Abena Turkson, said non-teaching staff should no longer be treated as an afterthought in the education sector.
She said the union expected the government and relevant authorities to take concrete steps within two weeks to address the outstanding concerns.
“We are giving government two weeks to act. If nothing is done, we will be forced to advise ourselves to protect the interest of our members,” she said.
TEWU-TUC warned that failure to address the issues could affect industrial harmony within the education sector.
The union, however, reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and called on the government to engage with it urgently to resolve the concerns of its members.
