Sustainability Skills and Careers Launchpad Africa (SSCLAfrica), an African-centred e-learning platform focused on green skills development, has been launched in Nairobi, Kenya, to equip the continent’s workforce for the emerging green economy.
The platform was launched at the Green Works 4 Africa Forum and provides online learning opportunities for students, professionals and organisations seeking to develop, upgrade or broaden their sustainability skills.
SSCLAfrica offers courses in areas including environmental, social and governance (ESG), renewable energy, climate resilience and adaptation, sustainable finance, circular economy, green technology, carbon markets, sustainable supply chains and future-of-work skills.
The platform’s courses are designed around African realities, industries and case studies, with the aim of making sustainability education more practical and relevant to professionals across the continent.
As part of the launch, SSCLAfrica has introduced a free three-hour course titled “The Green Skills Advantage.”
The course comprises two modules focusing on Africa’s green transition, workforce readiness and the integration of ESG principles into areas such as finance, procurement, human resources, operations and supply chains.
Head of Operations and Portfolio at Sustainability News Africa, Erica Bechaabagnaa Tengan, encouraged young people from different professional and academic backgrounds to take advantage of the platform and develop green skills relevant to their careers.
Nadya Ogwonyo, Lead for Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) at SSCLAfrica, said learners who successfully complete the course assessments would receive certificates.
She added that the course is self-paced and features recorded lectures, case studies, quizzes and practical assignments, with no prior experience in ESG or sustainability required.
Social Asset Strategist at SSCLAfrica, Natasha Ogwonyo, also stressed the importance of developing sustainability knowledge and terminology among young people to enable them to participate meaningfully in sustainability discussions.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SSCLAfrica, Dr Enoch Opare Mintah, described the platform as a significant step towards strengthening green skills development in Africa.
“What makes it particularly transformative is its African-centred approach: the courses draw on African examples, realities and case studies, ensuring that learning is relevant, practical and rooted in our own context,” he said.
He said the initiative goes beyond training to developing the human capital needed to support a just green transition, create decent jobs and promote sustainable livelihoods across Africa.
Beyond the introductory course, SSCLAfrica’s catalogue includes courses on Agenda 2063, renewable energy and transition, sustainable finance, circular economy and future-of-work skills.
The platform has also made courses such as “Understanding Agenda 2063” and “Green Skills for Successful Careers” available for free.
