The death toll from the fatal accident at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra-Kumasi Highway has risen to 11.
The development was confirmed by ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in an interview with Adom News.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026, and involved a tipper truck and a Sprinter bus.
The crash left the Sprinter bus badly mangled, trapping several passengers inside and prompting a major rescue operation by the GNFS and other emergency responders.
Five deaths were initially confirmed, with several others sustaining serious injuries.
However, further rescue and medical efforts have since increased the number of confirmed fatalities to 11.
Several injured victims were rescued from the wreckage and transported to health facilities for treatment.
The accident also caused significant traffic disruption on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, with portions of the road temporarily restricted to allow emergency responders to operate and clear the wreckage.
The GNFS earlier advised motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra to use the outer lane and exercise extreme caution when approaching the accident scene.
Motorists were also urged to slow down, cooperate with emergency responders and avoid obstructing ongoing rescue and recovery operations.
The circumstances that led to the collision remain unclear as investigations continue.
