The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has announced plans to establish a second National Theatre in Kumasi to expand cultural and creative infrastructure in the Ashanti Region.
However, the Minister said the government’s immediate priority is to complete an existing theatre and Centre for National Culture project in the region before embarking on the construction of a new facility.
Speaking during the Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026, Madam Gomashie said the proposed Kumasi National Theatre forms part of the government’s broader plans to strengthen the country’s cultural and creative arts infrastructure.
“We plan to build a second National Theatre in Kumasi,” she said.
According to the Minister, she toured theatre and Centre for National Culture facilities in the Ashanti Region and subsequently proposed to Cabinet that the government focus on completing an already existing project rather than starting construction of an entirely new facility.
She said Cabinet had approved the proposal, paving the way for work on the existing facility to be completed.
“I took a tour of the Ashanti Region’s theatre and Centre for National Culture spaces. I have suggested to Cabinet that instead of starting a new one, we focus on finishing what has been started,” she said.
Madam Gomashie explained that the approach would ensure that government resources are used efficiently by completing existing infrastructure before committing funds to new projects.
“And Cabinet is in approval of that suggestion. So that is what is going to happen, and if the opportunity comes, we start a new one,” she added.
The Minister also disclosed plans to rehabilitate the existing National Theatre in Accra as part of efforts to improve facilities available to the creative arts industry.
The proposed second National Theatre in Kumasi is expected to expand access to major performing arts and cultural infrastructure in the Ashanti Region and create additional space for creative productions and cultural activities.
