The government is set to renovate and modernise the National Theatre of Ghana with support from the People’s Republic of China, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has announced.

The Minister said the intervention forms part of efforts to restore the facility’s infrastructure, improve its functionality and technical systems, and transform it into a world-class theatre capable of promoting Ghanaian arts and culture.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026, Ms Gomashie said the project also reinforces the longstanding cultural partnership between Ghana and China.

“The Government of Ghana and the People’s Republic of China are supporting the Ministry in the renovation and modernisation of the National Theatre of Ghana, reaffirming China’s long-standing partnership with Ghana in the cultural sector,” she said.

According to the Minister, discussions between the Ministry and the Chinese government led to a high-level Chinese delegation assessing the National Theatre in December 2025 to determine the scope of the proposed renovation.

She explained that the planned works are expected to restore the facility and upgrade its technical and operational capacity to meet international standards.

“The intervention is expected to restore and modernise the Theatre’s infrastructure, improve its functionality and technical facilities and reposition the Theatre as a world-class theatre for the promotion of Ghanaian arts and culture,” she stated.

Ms Gomashie added that the Chinese government had assured Ghana of continued cooperation to ensure the facility is properly maintained after the renovation.

She also disclosed that management of the National Theatre has introduced a rigorous maintenance regime to preserve the facility while preparations for the broader renovation continue.

“A rigorous maintenance regime has been instituted by the management. We have improved the security situation at the National Theatre,” she added.

The renovation is expected to enhance the National Theatre’s ability to host major cultural and artistic events while providing a better platform for Ghanaian performers and creatives.
